Roulette

roulette-wheelIf you like movies chances are you have been witnessing some of the main characters playing this popular casino game during their adventures. The game is very easy to get started with, and still holds quite the excitement factor as you can always vary your risk and reward as you see fit.

As with blackjack, roulette was first invented in France in the 1800s. The idea at first was not to create a game, but it was the French scientist Pascal who were working on probability studies and made this “motion wheel” in order to do some experiments. The wheel were later introduced as a game of chance to the royalty of France and it quickly rised in popularity. This spread to the US and rest is history.

How to Play Roulette

In order to play roulette you as a player simply need to place your bets, and the rest is done by the croupier who spins the wheel and determines the winners.

The odds you are given on each of these bets depends on which type of game you are playing, and the probabilites you have of winning also depends on the game. The two biggest differences is found between the European wheel and the American wheel. The former has 37 slots, where 36 are numbers and the last one is zero and is colored green. The latter has 38 slots, where 36 are numbers and the last two are zeroes and are colored green.

Although this is the difference, the payout odds are usually the same on the games, and that means that the American version usually is worse for the player. However, you will find both types of roulettes at most casinos. They seldom run the game with only one of these. There are also instances where the odds are adjusted of the american version in order to entice more players playing and making it more fair, but be sure to check for this before going ahead with playing.

Roulette Strategy

So is it possible to win money playing on roulette? Certainly, plenty of people have done so. But you cannot be expected to do so. The game has a positive house edge and such you cannot make it your dayjob to be playing on a roulette wheel. As we have mentioned in our betting systems series, which is also popular to apply to the game of roulette as well, is that you cannot take a geometric series of values less than 1 and somehow end up with a positive number.

However, there are ways that you can beat roulette, but the situations arise far less frequent than it did many years back where people would look for biased wheels where it were more likely to end up on one side of the wheel than others. This would make different bets more profitable and sometimes create a positive edge for the player.

I would not go around looking for such wheels today as the casinos are well aware of this fact and keep their equipment up to standards and fair.
